McCabe's 10th anniversary show
Christopher Connelly, Rolling Stone
Heads were spinning last month at McCabe's, a guitar shop and 150-seat folk club in the L.A. suburb of Santa Monica. Performing on the tiny stage were Jackson Browne, Richard Thompson, Elvis Costello, T-Bone Burnett, Warren Zevon, David Lindley, John Hiatt, Jennifer Warnes and Nicolette Larson, with Ry Cooder and Van Dyke Parks nearby. After some duets, the throng romped through Hiatt's "That's the Way We Make a Broken Heart" and Zevon's "Werewolves of London, finishing with rockers like "Twist and Shout" and "So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star." Said Thompson, "Without sounding like an old hippie, I felt a real warmth among the musicians."
