ELVIS COSTELLO - IN EEN ANDERE WERELD

Geert Henderickx

“Blijf even hangen, wil je.

ELVIS COSTELLO - IN ANOTHER WORLD

Somewhere in the center of London takes a man in black in a place to a cup of coffee. It's still quiet at this hour, it begins gradually to run. Lunchtime In his mind, he stares straight ahead, until the aggressive sound of the espresso machine startles him. A glance at his watch showed him that he sure enough time has been lost sight of. Nearly twenty minutes though there is someone in the Netherlands impatiently by the phone waiting. Hurriedly he picks up his phone and dial the number last night passed him. "Hi there, Elvis Costello here ..."

Actually he does not prefer phoners, but sometimes now it can not just different. He now wants to travel through Ethiopia ahead anyway give the necessary publicity to For The Stars, an album especially if Anne Sofie von Otter Meets Elvis Costello has to find for lovers of various road sorts. The potential audience for this equally curious and ambitious project had been exceptional wide. So enjoy the Swedish mezzo-soprano in the world of classical music has a reputation as a talented singer, whose unusually versatile repertoire ranges from Handel to Verdi and Mendelssohn and Grieg. The former angry young man of British new wave, in turn, over the past decade showed himself even more meadow-oriented, in which he collaborated with, among many others Paul McCartney, The Brodsky Quartet, The Jazz Passengers and Burt Bacharach.

Twelve years ago, was now Costello (46) by his wife Cait O'Riordan, whom he had met in her time with The Pogues, treated to a performance of Berlioz 'La Damnation Faust by him when virtually unknown Von Otter. The concert proved nothing short of a revelation. "I even let her send flowers I had it. Upside down so I'm just not sure why her voice engages me like no other, because I can not explain with the best will in the world. When I hear it, I am overwhelmed with pure emotion. For that feeling exist although words, but those words are too weak and meaningless to describe you is lifted out. Yourself through music as it were, the moment To you powerless to go outside to hollow superlatives, would detract from that overwhelming experience. "

Eight years after that Berlioz evening gave von Von Otter and Costello at the invitation of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, a double concert in Stockholm. That meeting turned it back on to write the song cycle Three Distracted Women for her upcoming tour with their mutual friends of the Brodsky Quartet. During rehearsals von Otter padding on the advice of her husband or Costello might not even wanted to make an album. Her "I did, of course, not a second to think about it, even though it was in itself quite a risky undertaking. Because if classically trained vocalists venture to popular repertoire, resulting that nine times out of ten in something as frivolous as a Broadway-like plate. That's why I like wanted to work with ensemble something happy also preferred by Anne Sofie turned to go out. And then I insisted overbekends let her sing anything because there anyway to achieve any artistic honor more falls. It is much too thinly over done. "

Other than was intended, contains For The Stars nine songs in which Costello had hand, supplemented with as many pieces of greats like Tom Waits, Brian Wilson, The Beatles and even ABBA. "My original intention was to take, which I think deserved to be. Performed once in a totally different style only songs of others To my surprise, however, Anne Sofie was there to perform also work by me, but the idea also have to do a bunch of upbeat songs, I know it ultimately depends bring. I had an autumnal album in mind, a pretty complete set of wistful ballads that should sound. "Melancholy in an attractive way

"Hang on, you want. I have to go outside to catch a taxi or I'll be late for my next appointment. "While he has them transported himself to Brook Street, corner New Bond Street Elvis Costello says that the final sessions for For The Stars were preceded through extensive test shots. Place of action was to tell his cozy Atlantis studios in Stockholm, where still the grand piano that ABBA used to indestructible Dancing Queen. As facilitators Anne Sofie von Otter (45) had to start former classmates asked from her conservatory time, which then again meetroonden musicians from their acquaintances. "Whether it was pop, jazz, folk or classical, that combination was an all-rounder. So we had like a whole arsenal of tools at our disposal, ranging from cello, violin and piano to vibraphone, steel guitar and synthesizer. In addition, I did them not to chew everything, something I already do not like. In London, New York or Los Angeles, I had really can not hit better. "

Von Otter was literally stay close to home, realized Costello, otherwise they would not feel at ease and artistic adventure not dare. "As usual in classical music, the vocal and instrumental parts were therefore recorded simultaneously as a rule, however, Anne Sofie had for the first time in her life sung into a microphone directly, which requires a special technique, in which too much force, or articulate his evil out of the exaggerated. It was therefore important to keep, so they would be tempted to look. Higher registers not too soon everything as small as possible And with the whole ensemble in the same room together seemed like the atmosphere or within rooms, so she went to sing. "The more intimate

As a singer of classical works do the texts for Von Otter less important, in the sense that they do not have to recognize. Directly In popular music that is different, however, especially since the genre to a free interpretation requests. "The format has always been rather superficial," explains Costello off. "The nuances in eg the phrasing must bring in the performing there myself. That took some creativity Anne Sofie. Although it proved too unnatural for her to sing off the cuff but she has been able to add. Their own things to the music Moreover, nowhere in imitation lapse even in the still inextricably linked to Nina Simone The Other Woman, in her version sounds almost like a European art song. Wait a minute, will you, we're there. "

Costello does away, get out of the taxi and rounds the door off the conversation with a summary of what is on his agenda. Besides a number of special projects for festivals in America and England, he is considering the operation of which he composed music for Il Sogno, a dance performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream last year was staged. By an Italian company "And for the first time since I'm back to writing for a new album. Songs on my own Something concrete I can not tell you about it, except that there is no ballad will occur, because with that idiom, I have me time being occupied long enough. It has provided me with She of those good old Charles Aznavour even a world too. Delivered Thanks to the film Notting Hill they now have until nota bene Brazil and Thailand heard of me. Good thing, of course, though I do not really shoot further beast. "
