ELVIS COSTELLO - VOOR EENZAME ZIELEN

Geert Henderickx

ELVIS COSTELLO - LONELY FOR SOULS

Who thinks humans can lure out of his tent behind the artist comes to him a rude awakening. Just as the weather turns wasted effort to come. Advance litany of questions each Because once sat across from him, he takes it at the first best answer as all a whole slew of them. Full of enthusiasm, he goes with the subject to take to get minutes on to elaborate without a pin falls between gain. Yet he allows himself indeed guided by what is being raised, which he will not stoop to peddle precooked stories soon. Overlap after all, are still numerous interviews following the release of a new album rarely or never mention it. He is naturally simply an eager talker, which also can rattle like a machine gun. In three minutes he shoots as much text as many in a half hour. Elvis Costello talks can listen. Almost faster than a normal human

Not one or the other, but to him seems to have been lost. A gifted pop journalist When he went to the angry young man of the British New Wave in the early eighties, he wrote a cover text for a compilation of Gram Parsons, the patriarch of the country rock. His heartbreaking duet vocals with the siren Emmylou Harris to the GP and Grievous Angel albums drew him include the enviable phrase: "If you do not know how to move, then you are a big problem." Equally inspired commemorated in the unsurpassed blade Mojo summer Frank Sinatra with a truly wonderful story, which he passing a pressing issue in the world helped: what albums the Voice hear exactly is at home in the core collection of any self-respecting pop music lover? Who does not need to look at a Geeltje had of course already that monumental boxes can purchase not true that far too much of a good thing. Forget those compilations, he advised the reader, and start with those "fantastic trilogy 'from the second half of the fifties - In The Wee Small Hours, Only The Lonely and No One Cares. "There have been times when I listened to no other records. Times"

On Saturdays a showery afternoon at the end of a lost summer Elvis Costello remembers an Amsterdam hotel room once again the baby as the melancholic music of Ol 'Blue Eyes with the proverbial spoon was cast him. "Not for nothing was skin one of my first words, because according to my mother, I could not hear often enough I've Got You Under My Skin. When I was in my thirties, I'm really seriously go listen to Sinatra at times perhaps too intense. In the same time I fell under the spell of people like Chet Baker, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Mel Tormé. So I came to the realization that not only belonged to evocative music of the past, but just as good a place in the modern world could take. I let myself deliberately inspired by, in the sense that not all the songs on my albums necessarily with banging drums and electric guitars have to be performed. I also grabbed in composing ballads settled back at that earlier idiom, just to shut up and the different covers that I recorded. Throughout the years And with all this way my love for that genre eventually manifested rather curiously called. "

For what would it be? Elvis Costello has Painted From Memory, his eighteenth studio album in just over twenty years, his Only The Lonely created. He himself will never say in so many words, that's why he reacts a fraction of a second, slightly surprised when someone else does it. "A greater compliment someone could not give me. That is kind of like a modern rock album claim that it possesses the same impact as Revolver of The Beatles. I absolutely do not want Sinatra stabbing, to the crown though I certainly tried to make the theme of lost love, a melancholy record something that already has not happened., To my knowledge since time immemorial In addition, I watched sure to lapse into nostalgia because I find it just as cheap as lazy to call. Around essentially negative mood on So I do not abhor less sentimentality, a kind of post-adolescent infatuation with grief. With melancholy is moreover an infinite complex feeling, as I discovered as a grown man. Melancholy you wear with you, even if you find yourself in seventh heaven - it is a trait of your soul. "

To begin with, he would just like to point out that he Declan MacManus (44), in his early days as Elvis Costello al I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself had stood. their repertoire Those oldies from Dusty Springfield is one of the absolute highlights in the work of composer Burt Bacharach and lyricist Hal David, which is an impressive series of pop classics written in their name during the sixties. In addition, the American duo furore when the producers behind Dionne Warwick, the aunt of Whitney Houston, whose richly orchestrated hits despite their sophisticated sound also lovers of the rougher work time left unscathed. Although their songs always easy listening lie, stabbing melodies that can be such a complicated issue only technically gifted vocalists it from the feet. That combination of accessibility and artistry admires Elvis Costello indulgence, especially since he himself unwittingly alienated with artful albums as Spike and Mighty Like A Rose the general public and even the necessary fans of the first hour of it. Hence he is the king of the world showed up when he was given the opportunity to agree to work together. With the now septuagenarian Burt Bacharach

About three years ago, he was approached by the makers of Grace Of My Heart, a feature film based on the life of Carole King. With her husband Gerry Goffin formed the later successful singer-songwriter during the first half of the sixties, one of the many musical couples, who by day hits fabricated to order in the Brill Building on Broadway in an office day. "The director of Grace Of My Heart came up with the idea to listen with new pastiche-like songs which writers from that golden period should join forces with contemporary artists. Forces more or less fictional story The combination of Burt and me was a hit. Although we could take a ridiculously short deadline together due to commitments we were unable to deliver. A composition within five days by fax and answering machine Then the premiere of the film was delayed, which gives us the opportunity to put God Give Me Strength yet to record yourself. Soundtrack This cooperation tasted for both of us for more. No sooner said than done. "

His voice may be sure the tricks many people ringing in the ears as the scratching of fingernails on a chalkboard, yet Elvis Costello proves itself after The Juliet Letters and All This Useless Beauty again as a real ballad singer. He has therefore been rightly proud as a peacock on Painted From Memory, not least because there was equal distribution of tasks. "Burt and I bIeken not radically different musical conceptions after keeping, which makes me quite boldly dared to draw. On You would be the end result can be described as a set of compositional dialogues, where we seated at the piano stimulated each other, complemented and improved. He wanted to build something a crescendo, for example, while I suggested to change the melody. Chorus of a particular If all the great composers Burt distinguished by a clear, universal and yet unique style, which hopefully is in my lyrics for our record. I do not have time to turn emotions, any ambiguity or irony missing, I mean every word I sing. These songs are meant for lonely souls stabbing a heartened but happy people can also benefit by finding - if they at the front door hang a string of garlic to keep "the vampires out.
