Elvis Costello & The Imposters

Liverpool Philharmonic Hall
10th June, 2013

Ashley Jones

View: stalls

You want to get happy, try Elvis. "Lipstick Vogue," "Heart Of The City," "I Can’t Stand Up For Falling Down," "Radio Radio," and that was just the first four songs in a blistering set. The one-time new wave grudge-bearer hit his one-time home with song-choice spins of chance rather than a structured set-list, and Elvis kept up an astonishing pace for two hours, demonstrating what a fantastic sound he and The Imposters can generate from four basic components.

Most of the classics were present and correct, including a poignant rendition of "Tramp The Dirt Down," in the city where its subject matter meant the most. Other highlights included "Man Out Of Time" and "Almost Blue," before an extra-time hat-trick of "Every Day I Write The Book," "Pump It Up" and "Peace Love And Understanding."
