Remember that Elvis Costello album of covers which was rumoured to have received the thumbs-down from Warner Bros? Well, it appears that the tracks have turned up on a bootleg that is doing the rounds, and though no-one at IPC Towers has yet seen a copy, one ''Vox'' sleuth maintains that the album is simply titled ''Covers'' and contains such cuts as "Hidden Charms" (formerly by Link Wray, Chet Atkins, Howlin' Wolf, etc.), "Remove The Doubt" (Diana Ross), "I Threw It All Away" (Bob Dylan), "Leave My Kitten Alone" (Solomon Burke, The Beatles), "I've Been Wrong Before" (Cilia Black), "Bama Lama Bama Loo" (Little Richard), "Must You Throw Dirt In My Face" (Louvin Brothers, Waylon Jennings), "Pouring Water On A Drowning Man" (James Carr), "The Very Thought Of You" (Billie Holiday, Sinatra and zillions of others), "I Feel Like Dancing The Night Away" (Vince Taylor) and "Please Stay" (Drifters). | |||
Best of the bunch is reckoned to be a vicious version of "Leave My Kitten Alone" (which the Fabs performed at their 1962 Decca audition) and "Must You Throw Dirt In My Face?," Elvis's best-ever country cover. And, just in case you're wondering, nothing is yet scheduled as an official follow-up to ''Mighty Like A Rose''. Pity. | |||
