By rushing into the studio and cutting his tracks before he could rethink the situation, Elvis Costello shows a consistency not seen since 1986's Blood and Chocolate. While spots of Brutal Youth or When I Was Cruel flickered with Costello-as-rocker's once infallible instincts, Momofuku nearly consistently sounds like a man and band stripped to essentials and down to business. In L.A. for guest spots on Jenny Lewis' follow-up to Rabbit Fur Coat, Costello and band deliver the slashing opening chords of "No Hiding Place," the tough punk-distorted skrotches of "American Gangster," the lunging pulse of "Flutter and Wow" and the roughhoused piano of "Stella Hurt" with a tough inner confidence where the band's overt professionalism never permeates enough to hurt. Even the more stylized shuffle of "Mr. Feathers" isn't bogged down with a sudden burst of over-herniated bellowing. It's about time.
