The purpose of this page is to answer the following question:

"If I own the standard versions of all Elvis Costello albums, including the bonus discs from the Rhino and Hip-O reissue series, what other tracks do I need to own to have an absolutely complete collection of officially released songs, including different versions of the same song?"

The list excludes songs available only on video or DVD. The first three categories exclude: minor remixes, edit versions, and tracks on which EC only appears as a guest instrumentalist or backing vocalist. These are shown in separate lists at the end.

OS = original source; CS = current source (if there is a more convenient recently released source)

Albums containing all the non-gaps

The non-gaps are contained on the following albums. For some, a specific version of the album is indicated, due to it containing one or more of the above gaps.

The Courier (soundtrack), 1987

Minor remixes

  • 1977 Less Than Zero (OS:original UK single and A Bunch Of Stiff Records, prominent organ part during the opening bars, no organ after that, no double-tracked vocals on chorus)
  • 1977 Radio Sweetheart (OS:My Aim Is True Ryko reissue, most noticable difference is that it lacks the flange effect on the lead vocal that you hear during the introduction of the single/Rhino version)
  • 1977 I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself (live, OS:Live Stiffs (1978), mix is different to Rhino My Aim is True version. Lead vocal has been overdubbed, so that vocals are double tracked throughout)
  • 1977 I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself (live, OS:The Stiff Records Box Set (1978), another slightly different mix)
  • 1978 (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love And Understanding? (American Squirm mix, OS:B side of American Squirm by Nick Lowe, the song slightly slows down the further it goes)
Singles, Volume 2, 2003
  • 1981 Cry, Cry, Cry (OS:Singles, Volume 2 (2003), unfinished mix with EC messing up the start of the line, "Any question that I ask, you tell a lie lie lie". Single/Rhino version has same vocal take apart from correcting that error)
  • 1981 There Won't Be Anymore (live with The Attractions and John McFee, OS:Almost Blue Ryko reissue (1994), slightly different mix to Rhino bonus disk - most noticably, the spoken introduction and the rather shambolic start to the song are omitted)
  • 1981 Sittin' And Thinkin' (live with The Attractions and John McFee, OS:Almost Blue Ryko reissue (1994), slightly different mix to Rhino bonus disk)
  • 1981 Honey Hush (live with The Attractions and John McFee, OS:Almost Blue Ryko reissue (1994), slightly different mix to Rhino bonus disk)
  • 1981 Psycho (live with The Attractions and John McFee, single mix, fades earlier than the mix on the Rhino reissue and omits spoken introduction, OS:B side of Sweet Dreams single, CS:Almost Blue Ryko reissue)
  • 1983 Pills And Soap (extended mix, OS:B side of Pills And Soap single, CS:Singles, Volume 2 (2003))
  • 1984 Get Yourself Another Fool (Idiot mix, OS:Out Of Our Idiot, minimal reverb on the vocals)
  • 1984 Get Yourself Another Fool (Ryko mix, OS:Goodbye Cruel World Ryko reissue, CS:Singles, Volume 3 (2003), lacks intro, no fade out, a bit of reverb on vocal though much less than single/Rhino version)
  • 1985 Little Palaces (OS:King of America Ryko reissue (1995), lacks bass guitar part)
  • 1986 Uncomplicated (NME version, OS:free 7" e.p. Fourplay GIV 4, despite the label this is identical to standard version)
  • 1986 Uncomplicated (OS:Blood And Chocolate UK original CD and Girls Girls Girls CD, has a guitar part missing from the guitar break near the end, and no clunking anvil sound after the "horse that knows arithmetic" line)
  • 1987 Big Nothing (remix of A Town Called Big Nothing (The Long March), OS:Straight To Hell, in mono with no "Big Nothing" whispered vocal, no long fade out)
  • 1989 ...This Town... (Bastard mix, OS:The Elvis Costello Hour promo double LP, same as Spike album version but with "bastard" crudely covered by "sweetheart" for US radio)
  • 1997 My Mood Swings (promo mix, OS:1998 Mercury February Sales Sampler US promo, no declining bass run in introduction, electric guitar louder and further left in the mix, drums play through the "marshmallow" stop/start)
  • 2005 Who Are These People? (explicit version, with Burt Bacharach, OS:iTunes download by Burt Bacharach)
  • 2007 Bedlam (OS:iTunes download as "Frankincense/Nashville Mix", CS:iTunes Originals as "Nashville Alternate Version", various subtle differences from version on The Delivery Man, most noticably Steve Nieve's theremin is relatively quiet)
