Rolling Stone

Elvis Costello releases Armed Forces; a month later, he dukes it out with Bonnie Bramlett in a Columbus, Ohio, bar after he calls Ray Charles "a blind, ignorant nigger." Bomb threats and a general uproar in the media induce Costello to hold a press conference at CBS in New York, where he insists, "I am not a racist."
