El and George, kings of croon

I would have gotten up out of my deathbed to be here tonight," said Elvis Costello — and he was hardly hyperbolizing. The El braved a bad case of the mumps late last month to be on hand for a duet with premier country singer George Jones, who was taping an upcoming Home Box Office special in LA. Despite his illness, Costello was in superb voice, whipping through "Tonight the Bottle Let Me Down" and the Patsy Cline warhorse, "He's Got You," before swapping verses on Elvis' own "Stranger in the House" — a number the mutual admirers had previously recorded for a Jones LP. Backing the boys: Pete Thomas and Steve Nieve of the Attractions. guitarist John Hiatt and Rockpile vet Nick Lowe, whose failing eyesight recently earned him a pair of prescription specs.
