Lyrics

Here is something that you brushed aside
My eyes are dark
What if they were blue and certain
When I found myself fixed in amber
Captured in this loveless smile
So tell me this, did I stay away too long
But you never believed and neither did I

Here is someone you might recognize from the past
He was happy flirting with danger
Thrilling in that red velvet chamber
Love was just this reckless bruise of amethyst
Did I stay away too long
Was the spirit in power ruling my mind

Here's a moment that's stolen from time too sublime
I thought you knew I would be constant
As the stars hung up in that fragment
Breaking through this violent sky
So tell me why did I stay away too long
See the signature at the edge of the frame

Here's a moment that's stolen from time too sublime
I thought you knew I would be constant
As the stars hung up in that fragment
Breaking through this violent sky
So tell me why did I stay away too long
See the signature at the edge of the frame

And if you see who I am
Then perhaps you might shatter this sham

Credits

Performances

At the suggestion of Charles Mingus' widow Sue, Elvis wrote lyrics for six Mingus songs originally intended as instrumentals. Elvis has performed Self-Portrait In Three Colors in concert with The Charles Mingus Orchestra (the first performance was 2001-09-27 in Los Angeles), but a version with Elvis' lyrics has yet to be released officially.
