'Now Stiff signs Elvis' shock
Sounds
The latest recruit to the Stiff label is Elvis Costello whose debut single, "Less Than Zero" has just been released.
London-born Costello's past is shrouded in mystery although Stiff producer Nick Lowe claims to have met him first in the Liverpool Cavern some years ago. But he vanished again until Stiff plucked him out of oblivion and placed him in a recording studio with a backing group called Showband. Costello is graphically described in a Stiff press handout as "Buddy Holly on acid."

Stiff stiffs

Elvis Costello / Less Than Zero
It's spot the rip-off time, as a cross between Graham Parker and Brinsley Schwarz (the group), takes a wander through the pop history book in search of suitable riffs. The B-side is a little more palatable, but why bother when there’s still B. Schwarz albums that do it far better. With records like this Stiff isn't reversing into tomorrow so much as going forward into the past.
