Watching The Detectives

Elvis Costello

David Brown

The latest attempt at getting E.C. up there where he belongs in the singles charts offers a reggae-tied shuffler with all the trademarks of the by now expected Elvis lyrical/vocal control served up with finger flipping organ work and intervening twangy guitar, and a further step in the everyone-a-gem campaign from Stiff. You'd be pretty optimistic to forecast a huge hit for this, and hopefully the grey label is no omen. Still, we must live in hope mustn't we? Live flip spotlights Elv plus Attractions captured in full flight on "Blame It On Caine" and a beltalong "Mystery Dance." Come on everybody out there, whatya waiting for?
