Elvis ist tot. Es lebe Elvis — ist man im ersten Moment versucht zu sagen. Aber wenn Elvis C. einem Rock'n'Roll-Heroen gleicht, dann am ehesten Buddy Holly, von dem er, in seiner x-beinigen schlaksigen College-Boy-Pose, eine reichlich bekiffte Ausgabe sein könnte. Eine Schönheit ist Elvis Costello aus England wahrlich nicht, aber ein echter Typ, der sein Image schon mit in die Wiege bekam. Erste Bekanntschaft machte ich mit dem 'beautiful looser' auf dem Sampler des Punk-Rock-Labels ("the world's most flexible label") Stiff. "Less Than Zero" hieß der Song, den man auch auf Costellos erstem Album My Aim Ist True findet, und er ist nach wie vor eine der stärksten Kompositionen darauf.
Was und wie Elvis singt, weist für einen Punk-Rocker bei weitem zu viel Gefühl auf. Wenn sich auch ein Vergleich mit Graham Parker aufdrängt, so ist dieser ein wirklicher Optimist gegen den selbstquälerischen Realisten Elvis, der hier in zwölf sublimen Songs seine sexuellen Erfahrungen und Mißgeschicke erzählt. Und diese selbst-anklagende Schwermütigkeit hat nichts mit der wehleidigen Attitüde vieler anderer Songwriter zu tun — denn Elvis bezieht einen total mit ein und schafft gleichzeitig Distanz. Musikalisch bewegt er sich einerseits im Rockabilly der 60er Jahre, so etwa auf "Mystery Dance", wo er sein erstes sexuelles Erlebnis mit einem Mädchen beschreibt, oder auf "Ne Dancing", das an die Aufnahmen der Ronettes erinnert. Andererseits schlägt der gesunde Rhythm'n'Blues der 70er Jahre bei "Sneaky Feelings" durch oder auf "I'm Not Angry". Und "Alison" ist der schönste Schmachtfetzen, den ich seit langem gehört habe.
Nein, Elvis ist nicht nur sentimental, bei ihm wird der überwältigende Schmerz zum Melodram, das Mitgefühl weckt und einem wirklich die Tränen in die Augen treiben kann. Er hat sein erstes Album so rigoros und ohne Zimperlichkeit gemacht, daß man sich fragen muß: hat er seine Pubertätsprobleme anhand dieses Albums verarbeitet und sozusagen Psycho-Analyse betrieben? Und was wird er danach überhaupt noch machen können, wenn nicht der verlorene Rock'n'Roll-Antiheld bleiben?
Begleitet wird Elvis Costello auf diesem Album von der unbekannten Gruppe The Shamrocks, produziert hat es der Ex-Brinsley Schwarz Nick Lowe, der auch für andere Stiff-Künstler, vor allem aber für Graham Parker verantwortlich zeichnet.
