There are very few writers of Elvis Costello's quality and when this quality is further enhanced by a performance of sheer brilliance, like the one witnessed last night, then you feel very privileged indeed.
The appreciative Cardiff crowd were treated to hit after hit, as the Elvis back catalogue was taken out and dusted down, in an evening that you just didn't want to end.
Stripped down to the bare bones and minus two-thirds of The Attractions, Elvis and keyboard virtuoso Steve Nieve rattled up a storm with classic versions of "Watching The Detectives," "Clubland" and "(I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea."
For those so familiar with his work, it was a treat to hear new versions of old classics whilst the new material never looked out of place amongst an evening of the very best of Elvis Costello.
To pick a highlight from the performance would be difficult indeed, and everyone has their own favourite Elvis track from his earliest recording, "Radio Sweetheart," to his most recent hit, "She."
Personal favourites included intense versions of "I Want You" and "Almost Blue" whilst "God Gave Me Strength," from his recent collaboration with Burt Bacharach, oozed quality.
After numerous encores, Elvis did eventually leave the building. Let's hope we don't have to wait so long for his return.
