It's Declan, aka Elvis

Stuart Coupe

Declan Patrick Aloysius MacManus, aka Elvis Costello, returns to Australia in a month with possibly the best band he's assembled — not to mention a fairly nifty opening act.

Costello, one of the finest songwriters to emerge in the past decade, will be supported by none other than Nick Lowe, and behind Elvis ... well, that's another story.

James Burton (guitar) and Jerry Scheff (bass) were integral components of the other Elvis's (Presley) backing band.

Playing keyboards is Benmont Tench, the extraordinarily talented member of Tom Petty's Heartbreakers, and on drums there's Jim Keltner who, over the years, has become a legendary West Coast sessions player, for superstars like B. B. King, John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Ry Cooder, and in a hundred or so other sessions..

It'll be Costello's first visit to Australia since he announced to the world last year that he was reverting to his real name — but curiously his shows are still being billed as Elvis Costello And The Confederates.

The name change was apparently 'cause Elvis didn't think people were taking him seriously enough.

"It's sort of a minor battle that I've been fighting over the years, to keep reminding people that there is a human being behind these funny glasses," he said last year.

"The Elvis Costello thing is a very effective device, but it does provoke certain preconceptions."

To coincide with the Australian tour, Liberation Records has just released Elvis Costello — The Man, a greatest hits collection that includes as representative selection of material as you can expect from a single album culled from more than a dozen essential rock 'n' roll albums.

And undoubtedly there's more to come over the next few years.

"In the meantime, I'll carry on writing songs for as long as I've got something to write about, and continue to make records until somebody puts a gun to my head and tells me I can't," Costello said.

And that's just fine by me — and a few hundred thousand other people around the world.

Elvis Costello and The Confederates, with special guest Nick Lowe, play at the Sydney Entertainment Centre on Thursday December 3, starting at 8pm.
