Der gerissene britische Songwriter präsentierte sich in Zürich als musizierender Showmaster: Wer sich zu ihm und seiner dreiköpfigen Band auf die Bühne des nur respektabel belegten Kongresshauses traute, durfte an einem mit über 40 Songtiteln und Schlagwörtern bestückten Tombolarad drehen und so die Setliste mitbestimmen. Ein Konzert nach dem Zufallsprinzip.
Ein paar Fixpunkte gab es schon. Zum Einstimmen bretterte Costello durch eine Handvoll vorbestimmter Rock-Nummern, in der Konzertmitte sang er solo zu akustischer Gitarre, und Nick Lowes «(What’s So Funny About) Peace, Love & Understanding» ist seit Tourneebeginn als Abschluss gesetzt. Dazwischen führte Costello Bekanntes und Unbekanntes auf, schäkerte mit den Zuschauern und veredelte Stücke von Lennon/McCartney, Chuck Berry und Jagger/Richards.
