Costello strings fans a classic line
Peter Howell
Extract:
They've also made a song cycle without strict adherence to the form. The 20 songs are loosely based on Elvis Costello's idea of sending love letters to the fictional character Juliet Capulet of Romeo And Juliet. He was inspired after his wife showed him a newspaper story about a nutty professor in Verona who was acting as Juliet's personal secretary.
There's no mistaking the sound of inspiration in Costello's voice. Unlike last year's Mighty Like A Rose, an album that suffered from Costello's evident weariness with pop music, The Juliet Letters is a high-wire act, as Elvis struggles to graft his rough singing voice onto precise classical lines.
