Costello leaves fans confused

Peter Howell

Extract:

The performance by the British singer-songwriter opened in a mellow mood, with Elvis Costello sporting a wispy new beard and a greatly expanded girth, instead of the killer nerd pose of his early years.

In fact, Elvis seemed to be on auto pilot for about the first 10 songs, despite the strong backing by his four-piece band Rude 5, with Pete Thomas on drums (the last remaining member of his original Attractions band), Jerry Scheff on bass, Marc Ribot on guitar and Larry Knechtel on keyboards.
