Almost Blue

Elvis Costello & The Attractions

Ron Gluckman

Should be no real surprise. Now that everybody sounds like Costello; he sounds like — George Jones! Costello yodels with the best of the country crooners, especially on the sentimental ballads and great balls of fire honky tonkers. Clocking in at only half an hour, the record is something of an enigma. Not that Elvis II sounds insincere amongst the strings and twangy passions, but fans have heard him sing (and write) country tunes that make this stuff sound like bubblegum fluff.

Rating: B/B+.
