Rebels without a venue

Unicorn Times

Open less than a fortnight, the L.A. Cafe and its potential audience crossed like two ships in the night; owner Frank Polar has yet to say why he gave up so easily, though he still plans to open Silver Spring Station in March or April. Local stars Razz and the Nighthawks pulled better crowds than Nektar or Tuff Darts, whose visit coincided with a major snow. The postponed opening for SSS also post-pones (or cancels) several acts, including Talking Heads, the Dead Boys, and the Diodes. Pere Ubu and the Suicide Commandos are coming as planned, though they'll be at the Psyche Delly on the 22nd and 23rd. The local punkers also seem to have found a home — at the Atlantis, downtown near 10th and F. The Slickee Boys, White Boy, that Robert Goldstein/Roddy Frantz band (billed last month as the "special guest band," but known informally as the Urban Verbs), and perhaps some others will hold forth there on weekends throughout February. And of course the new wave's Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, will visit the Warner Theater on the 28th. His opening act, Boston rock hero Willie Alexander and his Boom Boom Band, is also worth watching.

He'll look so pretty if ...

Last month we gave good odds on the Sex Pistols showing. They didn't, but we just can't stop gambling. This month it's Willie Alexander, who'll probably be at the Warner Theater on the last day of February, opening for (you remember) Elvis Costello.

Willie's been around since The Lost, Goddard College's answer to the Beatles, and has also served time with Bagatelle, the post-Lou Reed Velvet Underground, and a combo called the Radio Hearts. Lately he and his Boom Boom Band have conquered the punk noveau scene in Boston, where he's been called "patriarch of punk" and "the world's only rhythm vocalist." Now he's got an album out on MCA and is touring nationwide. He and the Boom Booms will, we guarantee, make the trip downtown worthwhile. Now if only we could guarantee that he'll be there.
