Elvis Costello

The Province

Grade: B

Like rust, Elvis Costello never sleeps. A year and a half since his last Secret, Profane & Sugarcane album came out, here comes Mr. Prolific again. This time out he’s working with the Sugarcanes band from the last album plus his regular combo, the Imposters. Again working with producer T-Bone Burnett, overall Costello describes a desperate and decrepit landscape as only he can. "Jimmie Standing In The Rain" about a broke down cowboy singer in 1930s England is wonderfully evocative while "A Slow Drag With Josephine" is odd, dense and fascinating, like the man himself.
