North
Elvis Costello
Tom Harrison
As eclectic as he is prolific, Elvis Costello appears on yet another label in yet another mode. Maybe his romantic involvement with Diana Krall has influenced him but there is more jazz-pop intimacy in North than the spiky pop-rock of his previous album. Costello appears with a flexible ensemble as small as one other accompanist to the Brodsky Quartet to a larger jazz horn section. For all the understated elegance of North's arrangements, the Costello voice is the featured instrument. Elvis sings his face off in these muted, introspective songs.
