Oktober ins Wiener Konzerthaus.

Michael Huber

Vor sieben Jahren hatte Elvis Costello einen Gastauftritt in Charlie Sheens "Männerselbsthilfegruppe" in der Serie "Two And A Half Men".

Live is Life

Seine bekanntesten Songs sind "Veronica", "I want to" und "A Good Year for the Roses".

Das Konzert: Am Montag, dem 31. Oktober, gastiert Elvis Costello mit seiner Solo-Show im Großen Saal des Wiener Konzerthauses (20 Uhr).

Costello: "to repeat oneself, would be cowardly"

Elvis Costello, one of the greatest songwriters of the present, comes on October 31, to the Vienna Konzerthaus.

Seven years ago, Elvis Costello made a guest appearance in Charlie Sheen's "Men self-help group" in the series "Two and a Half Men". In the episode, Charlie's brother blurted Alan - played by Jon Cryer - in the poker game, Costello tapped on the shoulder and asked why he did not "like before" make music - as an angry man, and full rough energy and anger.

"This gag was written with some background knowledge," says Costello. He knows that he and his many collaborations - inter alia with mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter, jazz guitarist Bill Frisell or pop Orchestrator Burt Bacharach - even old fans came in front of the head. "To repeat always a huge mistake would certainly have been, and it would be cowardly., The older stuff also remain in the company of newer material so vivid."

Old and New

On his solo tour, which brings the legendary songwriter on October 31, to the Vienna Konzerthaus, Costello brought the mixing of the program. Though lacking the huge wheel of fortune, which for some time with his band "The Imposters" leads the British-born at concerts for the concept, fans turn from the audience at the wheel and so choose to let the songs would not work so well solo, says the 56-year-old.

For this, he explains, "you can hear the songs as they were written, with only one instrument Some I have modified -.. Lots of what are known as up-tempo songs are played as a ballad and vice versa. This allows me a lot of freedom, not only in the juxtaposition of past and present, but also in the combination of different moods."

The work, which Costello created since his debut album "My Aim Is True" (1977), brought up today produced many different fan bases. In England, he says, he was primarily known for his work with the band The Attractions of the 1970s, in the U.S., for the albums of the 1980s, including that produced by the folk expert T-Bone Burnett "King Of America" (1986), common.

Costello's latest album so far "National Ransom", published in 2010, also produced by Burnett, according to him, could have been his last. "Albums are nothing with which one can make money - you make them out of passion," he says.

Live is Life

Costello is defined more today by his live shows than his recordings: "I can take five brand new songs that no one has ever heard in my show when I feel like it," he says. "Over time, people will realize that something special is - it might be the only time that I perform a song I could write songs for special occasions There is so much one can hope for, and I do not understand.. why many people think so negatively when it comes to music, it is not the music that is compromised in some way -.. only way to sell music is changing I do not think that we already know the final solution today. "
