Elvis goes Jazz. Declan Patrick McManus, besser als Elvis Costello bekannt, war immer schon von klassischen Schreibern wie Cole Porter und Noel Coward beeinflusst. Längst hat sich seine New-Wave-Nervosität gelegt und der in London geborene Ire, der mit Almost Blue einen Jazzklassiker komponierte, tummelt sich künstlerisch im Erwachsenenfach. Ballettmusik, klassische Ballade, fauler Country & Western und triebabgefederter R & B –­ Elvis beherrscht alles. Nun legt er mit „Live With The Metropole Orkest“ ein Album vor, das sich dem Big Band Swing verschreibt. Seine wichtigsten Mitstreiter: Pianist Steve Nieve und Arrangeur und Dirigent Vince Mendoza, den auch Björk in die Pflicht nahm. Neben Köstlichkeiten von Charles Mingus und Fats Domino jubiliert sich Costello durch sein Repertoire von „Almost Ideal Eyes“ bis „God Give Me Strength“. (4/5)
