Elvis Costello begeistert in der Mainzer Phönix-Halle

MAINZ - Elvis Costello hat Hochkarätiges zur Geschichte der Popmusik beigetragen. Er kann sich auf Augenhöhe mit Größen wie Keith Richards oder Paul McCartney sehen. Ein höchst versatiler Künstler, dem nach Kooperationen mit dem Royal Philharmonic Orchestra und audiophilen High End-Produktionen nur noch der absolute Minimalismus auszuloten bleibt. Nur noch Costello, ganz alleine mit seiner Westerngitarre. Die Askese ist aber vielen Fans offenbar zu wenig des Guten. Zumindest lässt das der Blick auf die lichten Sitzreihen in der Mainzer Phönix-Halle vermuten.
Dabei ist schon das Vorprogramm umwerfend: Die 23- und 25-jährigen Schwestern Rebecca und Megan Lovell sind das Herzstück der Band Larkin Poe und verstehen auch ohne ihren Bassisten und Schlagzeuger im Handumdrehen das Publikum um den kleinen Finger zu wickeln. Die zuckersüßen Gesangsharmonien ihres Southern Blues-Feelings sind brillant aufeinander abgestimmt. Rebecca begleitet mit der Mandoline, während Megan in meisterlicher Beherrschung der Hawaiigitarre feinfühlige Kommentare improvisiert. In der Umbaupause sind viele noch enttäuscht, dass im Foyer die letzten CDs ausverkauft sind. Doch drinnen legt Elvis Costello ohne große Ankündigung schon los. Mit weißem Hut, dunkelblauem Anzug und pinkfarbenen Cowboy-Schuhen ist er angetreten. Über den Geschmack des 60-jährigen Briten mit dem Markenzeichen Hornbrille lässt sich streiten. Doch machen ihn ein paar Macken nicht unsympathischer.
Genialer Entertainer
Aus 37 Karrierejahren und 29 Alben hat er reichlich Unterhaltsames zu zitieren. Angefangen mit „45“ auf der verzerrten Akustikgitarre, „Veronica“ und später seinen Debüt-Hit-Reggae „Watching the Detectives“. Costello ist ein Entertainer par excellence. „Das nächste Stück spiele ich für meine Frau, die jetzt das macht, was sie üblicherweise jeden Sonntagabend macht: sie sitzt zuhause und trinkt Brandy mit unseren siebenjährigen Zwillingen Hank und Frank, um sie auf’s Showbusiness vorzubereiten.“ Seine Anekdoten sind Schenkelklopfer, seine nachdenkliche Blues-Melancholie berührt, seine überhauchte, gekonnt tremolierende Stimme begeistert, seine Experimentierfreude mit Verzögerungs- und Überlagerungseffekten fasziniert. Costello stellt sich an den Bühnenrand und singt mit seiner charismatischen Stimme unverstärkt in der mucksmäuschen stillen Halle „Alison“, zum Ende hin dann noch einmal zusammen mit den Lovell-Schwestern als letzte Zugabe den mitreißenden Hippie-Klassiker „Peace, Love and Under-standing“. Nach gut zweieinhalb Stunden Show bleiben keine Zweifel: Dieser Mann ist auch alleine ein Erlebnis.
