Spike

Elvis Costello

Chris Ruch

Extract:

And speaking of brilliant, 1989 was also the year that saw Elvis Costello actually have a hit song. After more than ten years of making albums, Costello was still stronger than ever on Spike. While most of the music on the radio was dealing with the same old subjects of love, lust, and breaking up, Costello's "Veronica" told the story of a woman suffering from Alzheimer's disease. But don't let the pop sound of "Veronica" fool you, every song on Spike has its own unique sound. The subject matter of the songs is just as eclectic as the music; Costello covers subjects ranging from capital punishment and Margaret Thatcher to self-image and God. Spike proves that Elvis is still King.
