D D D G G D D D G G D D D G G A D END- Notes: In this week's episode, "Key-Change to the City", the Declanator declares war on monotonous rock-n-roll songs that never stray from the key in which they begin. And, as you can tell by his gentlemanly demeanor and the look in his partially dislocated, metal, TV eyeball, he intends to eat the women and children first! This seemingly simple rocker is a lesson in key modulation. The ascending key changes from the key of A to B to C and on to D build such tension that by the final scream in the last chorus, the house is really rockin' and the windows are rattlin'! (And I ain't talkin' 'bout no panty-waist 3.11 or Windows '95 either!) Listen to the record for the rhythm of your strumming. Section 1 - Nothing tricky here. Use these chords: A - 577655 D - x5777x E - x7999x E open - 022100 Section 2 - I usually begin each chord change with a bass note that is the root of the given chord. For example, when I come to the first D chord, I first pick a single note D, then go on strummin' the D chord. Watch the break after the E. Use the following chord along with A, D, and E from Section 1: B - 799877 Section 3 - Second verse, same as the first. Same chords and break. Section 4 - That's two measures of F# beginning on "...brief". (Check the record.) Chords: F# - x9(11)(11)(11)x (11) means the eleventh fret Section 5 - Now things are starting to get interesting. We're in B now! Again, begin each chord change with a bass note. Keep the rhythm similar to a country/hilbilly pattern of bass note, chord, bass note, chord, etc. Same chords, plus these: B/F# - x99877 F#/C# - 9x(11)(11)(11)x Section 6 - Time to return home for a moment only to find that the Declanation Station has been redecorated! We're using the same chord structure we used in Section 1, only now we're in the key of C! At the end, rather than continue up the neck to the G chord, instead, move from the barre chord F# in Section 5 to an open G. This makes playing and singing feel better and helps set up the chord changes yet to come. ****Special added embellishment************** If you want to get fancy, add a walking bass line on the 4th and 5th strings after the last C chord that takes you to the F in Section 7. Listen to the record for clues on this one. It adds a nice touch to a high point in the energy level of the song. Here it is: 1------------- 2------------- 3------------- 4-----0-1-2--- 5---3--------- 6------------- Chords: C - x32010 F _ 133211 G - 355433 G(open) - 3x0003 Section 7 - Voila! Back to the verse structure, now in the key of C. More chords: D(open) - xx0232 A(open) - x02220 Section 8 - We should be rockin' real good now. There are special chords for the fill after the last "It's goin' . . .". Only use these chords here. Fill chords: A - xx765x G - xx543x D - xx423x A(open) - x02220 You already know this one. Section 9 - Toss me a beer and get ready to scream, boys, cause we're goin' home, this time in D! Use all open chords here. You should already have the chords down.

Finish on E ______________________________________________________________________ This is my first attempt at an Elvis transcription, so if anyone has any corrections or comments please feel free to update my chords (I know there are more than a few mistakes in it.) I have used the notation that has been common for these transcriptions : a lowercase letter means play the bass note, but keep the previous chord formation. For example, after the first verse I play the E chrord regularly, and use my thumb to play the bass notes quickly. From reading the CD liner notes, it seems that Elvis was kind of drunk when he recorded this song. I think that it gives his voice a sort of slurry quality that fits this song perfectly, plus I always love it when it is just Elvis accompanying himself on the guitar. He also steals a line from "Crimes of Paris" (or did "Crimes of Paris" steal it from this song), when he talks about "the words of love".
