She said that she was working for the ABC News
It was as much of the alphabet as she knew how to use
Her perfume was unspeakable
It lingered in the air
Like her artificial laughter
Her mementos of affairs
"Oh" I said "I see you know him"
"Isn't that very fortunate for you"
And she showed me his calling card
He came third or fourth and there were more than one or two
He was a fine idea at the time
Now he's a brilliant mistake

He thought he was the King of America
But it was just a boulevard of broken dreams
A trick they do with mirrors and with chemicals
The words of love in whispers
And the axe of love in screams
I wish that I could push a button
And talk in the past and not the present tense
And watch this lovin' feeling disappear
Like it was common sense
I was a fine idea at the time
Now I'm a brilliant mistake

END-

Notes: In this week's episode, "Key-Change to the City", the
Declanator declares war on monotonous rock-n-roll songs that never
stray from the key in which they begin. And, as you can tell by his
gentlemanly demeanor and the look in his partially dislocated,
metal, TV eyeball, he intends to eat the women and children first!
This seemingly simple rocker is a lesson in key modulation. The
ascending key changes from the key of A to B to C and on to D
build such tension that by the final scream in the last chorus,
the house is really rockin' and the windows are rattlin'! (And I
ain't talkin' 'bout no panty-waist 3.11 or Windows '95 either!)

Listen to the record for the rhythm of your strumming.

Section 1 -

Nothing tricky here.

Use these chords:
A - 577655
D - x5777x
E - x7999x
E open - 022100

Section 2 -

I usually begin each chord change with a bass note that is the
root of the given chord. For example, when I come to the first D
chord, I first pick a single note D, then go on strummin' the D
chord. Watch the break after the E.

Use the following chord along with A, D, and E from Section 1:
B - 799877

Section 3 -

Second verse, same as the first. Same chords and break.

Section 4 -

That's two measures of F# beginning on "...brief". (Check the
record.)

Chords:
F# - x9(11)(11)(11)x
                (11) means the eleventh fret

Section 5 -

Now things are starting to get interesting. We're in B now! Again,
begin each chord change with a bass note. Keep the rhythm similar to a
country/hilbilly pattern of bass note, chord, bass note, chord, etc.

Same chords, plus these:
B/F# - x99877
F#/C# - 9x(11)(11)(11)x

Section 6 -

Time to return home for a moment only to find that the Declanation
Station has been redecorated! We're using the same chord structure we
used in Section 1, only now we're in the key of C! At the end, rather
than continue up the neck to the G chord, instead, move from the
barre chord F# in Section 5 to an open G. This makes playing and
singing feel better and helps set up the chord changes yet to come.
****Special added embellishment**************
If you want to get fancy, add a walking bass line on the 4th and
5th strings after the last C chord that takes you to the F in Section
7. Listen to the record for clues on this one. It adds a nice
touch to a high point in the energy level of the song. Here it is:

1-------------
2-------------
3-------------
4-----0-1-2---
5---3---------
6-------------

Chords:
C - x32010
F _ 133211
G - 355433
G(open) - 3x0003

Section 7 -

Voila! Back to the verse structure, now in the key of C.

More chords:
D(open) - xx0232
A(open) - x02220

Section 8 -

We should be rockin' real good now. There are special chords for the
fill after the last "It's goin' . . .". Only use these chords here.

Fill chords:
A - xx765x
G - xx543x
D - xx423x
A(open) - x02220 You already know this one.

Section 9 -

Toss me a beer and get ready to scream, boys, cause we're goin'
home, this time in D! Use all open chords here. You should already
have the chords down.

G C G

G C
You'll come in a sweetheart and you'll go out a stranger
          D
Well you try to lover her but she's so contrary

Like a chainsaw running through a dictionary
                                          C D
So get your mind off the sweet behind of our little angel

[Verse 1]
Baby can you understand me now
Sometimes I feel a little mad
Don't you know that no one alive can always be an angel
When things go wrong I seem to be mad

[Chorus]
I'm just a soul who's intentions are good
Oh Lord please don't let me be misunderstood

[Intro]

[Verse 1]
Baby sometimes I'm so carefree
With a joy that's hard to hide
When other times it seems that all I have to do is worry
And then I know you're bound to see my other side

[Chorus]

[Intro]

[Verse 2]
If I get edgy I want you to know
That I never mean to take it out on you
Life has its problems and I get my share
But that is one thing that I would never do 'cause I love you

[Verse 1]
Oh don't you know I'm human
I got my faults just like anyone
Sometimes I lie awake long regreting
Some foolish thing, some sinful thing I've done

Glitter Gulch

A D
Enter Madam X painted in a shocking pink spangled dress
E A
Her teeth are perfect but her mouth is loose
A D
Rubbing their hands together she persuades them that it's better to
confess
E A
Which unpleasant fate they'd like to choose

(chorus)
D
Every step might be your last
D G
Money signs are in your eyes sucker

------------------------------------------------------------------
D
You've been taken in this time
D G
You might just get out alive if you're lucky
D
All the vultures tuning in to Glitter Gulch
    E
Are looking in on you
            A
And they're hungry

He stood five feet tall in his elevator shoes and stovepipe hat
He was known by several different names
Prompted by Madam X he answered all their questions
And then after that he said I'm sick and tired of stupid games

(chorus)

G
We've got prizes if you can afford
     D
Some small humiliation before you get your reward
        G
And I'd rather be an outlaw than an inlaw to you
                                 A(7)
And to live my life in miserable poverty
A7
Than to have to grovel to have some dream home hovel
                         G A
So watch me while I get away with prime time robbery

(chorus)

As he enters Madam X he things of red raged faces and the sweet
greenbacks
He climbed upon his honey and he covered her with money
As they do their victory dance
He thinks I hope they choke upon their laughter tracks
They can all go straight to hell while we howl down the whole hotel

Hint: if you've got a friend to play along with, try putting
a capo on the 4th fret and playing the equivalent progression
in C, I think this is what the other guitar is doing on the

And all that powder's gone to waste
Don't think for a moment dear that we'll ever be through
I'll build a bonfire of my dreams
And burn a broken effigy of me and you

Little Palaces

the basic sound, however, is the same.

In Chocolate Town all the trains are painted brown, and the silver=
 paper of the wrapper.
          Em D G C D G
There's a dapper little man, and he wears a wax mustache
        C D G C D G
That he twists with nicotine fingers as he drops his cigarette ash.=

    D G
And someone comes and sweeps it up, and then he doffs his cap
              D G
And there's a rat in someone's bedroom, and they're shutting someone's=
 trap.
            Em D
And they'll soon be pulling down the little palaces.

        Em D G C D G=20
And the doors swing back and forward, from the past into the present
        C D G C D G
And the bedside crucifixion turns from wood to phosphorescent.
            D G
And they're moving problem families from the South up to the North,
D G
Mother's crying over some soft soap opera divorce,
        C F D
And you say you didn't do it, but you know you did of course,

And they'll soon be pulling down the little palaces.

       C D G C D G =20

I'll Wear It Proudly

tabbed by Melinda Hale

If anyone has more elaborate chords than this, go ahead and fix
them. I usually just play these and make up for it with soulful
strumming and a pain-filled vocal (emotion, smarty-pants, not
the quality of my singing...)

D A
I hate this flaming curtains they're not the color of your hair
A7 D
I hate these striplights they're not so undoing as your stare
  D D7 G
I hate the buttons on your shirt when all I wanna do is tear
  G A
I hate this bloody big bed of mine when you're not here

[chorus]:
       D G
Well I finally found someone to turn me upside down
    D A
And nail my feet up where my head should be
        D G
If they had a King of Fools then I could wear that crown
    D A G ?
And you can all die laughing because I'll wear it proudly

Well you seem to be shivering dear and the room is awfully warm
In the white and scarlet billows that subside beyond the storm
You have this expression dear no words could take its place
And I wear it like a badge that you put all over my face

[chorus]

A G D
I'll wear it proudly through the dives and the dancehalls
   A G D
If you'll wear it proudly through the snakepits and catcalls
       A G D
Like a fifteen year old kid wears a vampire kiss
       G
If you don't know what is wrong with me
                           A
Then you don't know you've missed

We are arms and legs wrapped round more than my memory tonight
When the bell rang out and the air turned blue from fright
But in shameless moments you made more of me than just a mess
And a handful of eagerness says "What do you suggest?"

[chorus]

American Without Tears

tabbed by Melinda Hale

I was gonna be all snazzy and type in the "other" lyrics, rather than
the ones in the CD booklet, but then I decided that if I waited until
I got around to *that*, it would never happen, so maybe later...

I'm doing this at work, so I don't have my guitar here to check it
(wouldn't that be a nice stress-alleviater? guitars at work!) but
this is how I have it written in my cd booklet.

By all means, correct and improve at will!

--Melinda

G C G
Outside in New Orleans the heat was almost frightening
       G A D
But my hotel room as usual was freezing and unkind
   G C G
On TV they prosecute anyone who's exciting
     G D G
So I put on my overcoat and went down to find
   G C G
In Revlon and Crimpelene they captured my heart
       G A D
To the strain of a piano and a cocktail murderess
        G C G
She was singing that "It's Too Late", I agreed with that part
    G D G
For two English girls who had changed their address

[chorus:]

Poisoned Rose

tabbed by Spencerob@aol.com

Here are the chords to "The Poisoned Rose." I have never laid out chords in
this format before, so I did my best to put the changes where they occur in
the text, even though it looks a bit awkward. Any confusion will I am sure
be cleared up by listening to the recording.

The poisoned rose
                 Eb Ab
That you gave to me
           Eb C
It left me half alive
    F Bb B9 Bb Eb
And half in ecstasy

                        Eb7
But if half of your love
Ab7 Adim7
Is all I can win
Eb C7
Give me just a fraction
    F7 Bb Eb Ab7 Eb
But no more medicine

    Bb Bb+ Eb Ab
The poisoned rose
               Eb Ab
On a Valentine card
              Eb C
That you take straight to the heart
     F Bb B9 Bb Eb
That you call my junkyard

                    Eb7
But if all I can do
Ab7 F7
is save pieces of you
                  Eb
The piece of your mind
                  Eb7 Ab7
The piece of your heart

                Adim7
Didn't tear me apart
                       F7
Like the poisoned rose

Into this very sad affair

Everytime we do the decent thing
         B9 Bb9
Somebody spikes the drink

And a single becomes a pair

(N.C.) Eb Bb7
The poisoned rose

That I keep pressed between the white sheets
      F7 Bb B9 Bb Eb
Where you lie half undressed

I threw away my shirt and shoes
    Eb7 Ab7
You looked and I dived in
                           F7
It's just you and me now
                             Eb
'Cause I threw away the gin

I threw away your alibis
    Eb7 Ab7
And all your worn-out clothes

I threw myself upon the floor
    Adim7
But I couldn't throw away
              Eb Ab
This poisoned rose

This poisoned rose

This poisoned rose

The 1st transcription for Suit of Lights was nearly
perfect; I just have one correction

    C C/B C/Bb
and think of all the
F/A Am7 Adim G
pleasure that it brings

This progression is repeated again later in the song.

"and she should tell him yes I'll let him (go?)"

The original transcription was basically accurate except for the Adim
in place of the F7 chord. The fingering for Adim is as follows:

E x
A x
D 1
G 2
B 1
E 2

Sleep Of The Just

tabbed by Melinda Hale
with help from Mark Schnitzius

G Bm
The soldier asked my name and did I come here very often

       Em C
Well I thought that he was asking me to dance

      G Bm
In my holy coat and hat and him in his red bonnet

          Em C
We'd have made a lovely couple but we never had the chance

[chorus:]

G C
And now you say that you've got to go

G C
Well if you must you must

G C D G C G D
I suppose that you need the sleep of the just

Well it was a powerful day and there were black crows in the road
And I kept my strong opinions to my chest
I suppose I should have told them that I was on fire for you
When the bus burst into flames outside some place, 'The Poet's Rest'

[Repeat chorus; come out like this:] G C G G7

  C Bm
A girl woke up in a naked light and said

        C G
He even looked like her brother in the army but she never mentions him

         B7 Em
He'll be tucked up in his bed tonight with his dirty-pictures girl

        C
Saying, 'You're some mother's daughter you know or is it

D D/C D/B D/A
immaterial girl?'

Now she's pinned up upon the barracks wall in her home town
All the soldiers taking turns with their attentions
And as they speculate what she'd look like beneath that thin nightgown
His family pride was rising up as he cast his eyes down

[Last chorus: come out of it with Em then repeat verse chords
to fade]

This is my first attempt at an Elvis transcription, so if anyone has
any corrections or comments please feel free to update my chords (I
know there are more than a few mistakes in it.) I have used the
notation that has been common for these transcriptions : a lowercase
letter means play the bass note, but keep the previous chord
formation. For example, after the first verse I play the E chrord
regularly, and use my thumb to play the bass notes quickly.

From reading the CD liner notes, it seems that Elvis was kind of
drunk when he recorded this song. I think that it gives his voice a
sort of slurry quality that fits this song perfectly, plus I always
love it when it is just Elvis accompanying himself on the guitar.
He also steals a line from "Crimes of Paris" (or did "Crimes of
Paris" steal it from this song), when he talks about "the words of
love".

Shoes Without Heels

This love of mine is packed with stepping stone
      B7 E B7
These shoes are made for walking in reverse
       E f# g# A
At the dead of night, you tiptoe out and leave me all alone
        F#m B7
Putting on your satin slip-ons and your sultry French cologne.

e f# g G#m
                            C#m
She's wearing shoes without heels.
F#m B7
She's walking over the floor.
E
She's walking all over me
                             f# g# A
From here to there, you know how it feels
B7 E
When she walks right out of the door.

Well, I thought that I was bigger than this town
I thought I'd spend a pace and go the distance
But she picked me out, she used me up, and then she put me down
Now I'm driven til I'm crying, or I'm dreaming 'til I drown.

She's wearing shoes without heels.
She's walking over the floor.
She's walking all over me
From here to there, you know how it feels
When she walks right out of the door.

e f# g G#m

                                        C#m
While you're busy packing underwear and other useless trinkets,
        F#m B7
Spare a thought for worthless men who drag on women like they're cigarettes
           G#m
'Cause you watch you walk away from him
      C#m
While he gets down and deals
          F#m B7
Oh, he'll watch you walk away without heels

Oh, you think that he's a fool to tolerate
All the liberty you cherish and you roughly take
But to see your love turn slowly from indifference to hate
Would hurt him more than any heart that you might care to break.

She's wearing shoes without heels.
She's walking over the floor.
She's walking all over you
But when she's finished, I know what I'll do
When she walks right back through the door.
