40 years (and a bit ) on..................................... The first time on this extensive and largely successful tour where a two night residency takes place showing the esteem Elvis seems to have gathered on the East coast of the United States, in particular, is heard here in Philadelphia at the famed Tower Theatre, in Upper Darby. This is never likely to match the quality of the show previously upped here from the second night (and I can't for the life of me work out where I sourced that particular recording) but as with all of the JEMS recordings, the quality is still way above those not from JEMS for this period. It is an amazing testament to Jared and those associates that 40 years on we are able to listen to concerts which sound as fresh and vibrant as the day of recording and I cannot thank the folk at JEMS enough for their willingness to share these recordings and their help, guidance and extreme patience with me as I assemble this project which would be so much inferior without their generous and long-suffering support. Elvis kicks off this show with "Shot With His Own Gun" and the usual pattern then follows with the remaining rhythm section of The Attractions bounding on for "Accidents Will Happen" and an especially buoyant "Strict Time". "You'll Never Be A Man" makes a somewhat rare and early appearance in the set but I sense a little unease with the song from Elvis and indeed, this is only the fourth of five performances actually recorded of this sing throughout the tour. After another dignified and solemn performance of the slow version of "Clowntime Is Over", Elvis dedicates "Clubland" to all those who were present at the Hot Club, back in 1977 where he raises a cheer from those who have been on the journey all the way through with him. Martin Belmont arrives just before "Green Shirt" which seems an odd song to start off with an extra lead guitarist but again with Steve present on stage, Martin's playing is far more supportive and less to the fore than the keyboard-less Attractions gigs of 1980. The pace seems to pick up through the medley of "I've Been Born Again - King Horse" before slackening for "Secondary Modern" but then "High Fidelity" is taken at top speed (I checked the pitch twice!) and continues into "You Belong To Me" before the band rein in for "He's Got You". As the band seem to reach the usual ending there must be some sense of a further continuation as Steve plays a rather hymnal few chords at the end of "Pump It Up" and indeed the ending of the concert is delayed until a further four songs are played, all well-known songs from their repertoire which suggests these hadn't been part of the setlist originally produced by Elvis. Martin Belmont seems a little lost in "Walk And Don't Look Back" but the others play all four songs with the air of a band really enjoying themselves!. Hope you do too with this offering.
