A short drive along the A34 and M4 brought me to the Regency splendour that is Bath, famous for its Roman Bathing Spa and the magnificent buildings from the early 19th Century and also for its congestion! However, it took little time to negotiate the traffic and thanks to a suggestion from the fan forum I found a parking space directly opposite the Forum. Elvis mentioned that he had last appeared here in 1978 and then once before on the Live Stiffs Live tour and asked if anyone had attended those gigs. A few muffled cheers responded and Elvis quipped that as he asks that on each succeeding tour, the number of responders grows less and less. It drew a few ironic cheers but is a fact that it's hard to ignore as we all age. The gig started off with the band marching on to the sound of the Rusty recording and Elvis again sang along with the last few lines before strumming the chord of "D" and starting "Accidents Will Happen". I was fortunate enough to be given an upgraded seat courtesy of the ladies from the North and was on the front row and it was incredible to be able to see Elvis and Charlie in particular up close. The same songs as usual followed but "The Death Of Magic Thinking" was played earlier than usual into the set with Pete's dynamic drumming firing up the band. Elvis does a little dialogue during "Watching The Deectives" before launching into "Invisible Lady" . The next song is a surprise as Elvis sings the first verse of "Radio Radio" in Spenish as a gesture to the Spanish Model release. Another revelation is the performance of "45" ( I can't wait for the next version "78" which should be played incredibly quickly ! We have "Brilliant Mistake - Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" as a less frequent rendering and then a dedication of "Let Me Roll It" for Paul McCartney's 80th birthday with Elvis singing both "Happy Birthday" and the first line of The Beatles "Birthday" at the end - a genuinely lovely homage. As the show ended, Elvis added "Red Red Wine" to the end of "Alison" and the band looked to leave ( especially Pete) and then Elvis called them back for the rapturous crowd to perform "We Are All Cowards Now" and then Pete exited rather quickly to the right of the stage rather than his usual jaunt around Steve's side - wihich in retrospect shows he may well have been feeling under the weather anyway. This was one of my favourite concerts on this tour, the audience was great ( as they were at Ipswich which has already been posted here) so hopefully you'll also find this very listenable.
