It seems that R.T.E.'s famine of 'Rock Music' is over. The new programme, 6-5 Live — broadcast every Saturday at 6.00 p.m. — brings to an end their attempt to convert hard core Punks, Teds, Mods, Rockers and Headbangers over to the more mellow style of Country and Western.
The show is fronted by Dave Heffernan — television's answer to Dave Fanning — who has long been associated with the fight for much more music on our National airwaves and whose spot on Anything Goes is regarded as a major coup, succeeding, as it does, in getting many music starved rock fans out of bed on Saturday morning.
Although the programme will have a live band in the studio each week, it will also have a strong flavour of promotional video films which failed to appear on Top of the Pops — e.g., U2's "Out of Control" as well as Tokyo Olympic's 15-minute Dance Movement film.
International groups who have agreed to appear on the programme include: XTC, The Skids, Elvis Costello, and the Shakin' Pyramids. While groups like the Lookalikes, the Shade and Tony Koklin and other small Irish groups will be taking to the boards.
The programme will not only give established groups more exposure, but, more importantly, will provide a platform for those bands who are trying to get off the ground.
