I'm Your Toy
Elvis Costello
Bruce Lange
I never understood why Elvis decided to record an album of country music, Almost Blue, in 1981. The very concept of "country" music would alienate most of his fans — why would the new king of cool lower himself to the rhinestone and okra level? Yet, this three-song 45 rpm record shines. The A-side was recorded live with a full orchestra and pedal steel guitar. The syrupy lyrics evoke images of redneck bars and semi-literate workers reverently describing the best-looking girls they've been able to talk into bed. It's nice. Of the two songs that comprise the B-side, a spontaneous rendition of Johnny Cash's "Cry Cry Cry" stands out. "Wondering" sounds like a funeral march played by a roller skating rink organist.
