''Armed Forces'' is weer helemaal af; weliswaar niet zo'n stap vooruit als ''This Year's Model'' ten opzichte van ''My Aim Is True'', maar wel een consolidatie van het hoge peil. De titel ''Armed Forces'' refereert aan drie centrale nummers op de plaat, die alle het leger of andere militante organisaties belichten. Zo haalt Costello in "Senior Service" zeer venijnig uit naar de marine en laat hij in het macabere "Goon Squad" een jongeman in een brief aan zijn ouders opscheppen over zijn vorderingen bij een moordbrigade (''"They want you to come out to play you'd better say goodbye"''). En op al die snobs die, voor ze ''Armed Forces'' gehoord hadden al wisten dat ze deze plaat niet goed zouden vinden, omdat die Costello nu maar eens passé moest zijn, sturen we gewoon "Oliver's Army" af. Verleidelijk vermomd als lieftallige Abba-meisjes laten deze huurlingen, mits er maar met klinkende munt betaald wordt, niets van de vijand heel, of die zich nu in Nederland, Palestina of Zuid Afrika bevindt (''"If you're out of luck or out of work, we could send you to Johannesburg"''). | |||
Wat het geluid van de plaat betreft: dat verschilt niet veel van dat van ''This Year's Model''. Dus een nadrukkelijk aanwezige Costello en de strak, karig en perfect begeleidende Attractions, bij wie Steve Nieve weer opvalt met zijn opvallende en functionele Farfisa-orgeltje. En gelukkig doet Costello zijn naam van 'Intro-Koning' ook weer alle eer aan. | |||
