October 18, 1978, CBGB, New York, St. Mark’s Church Poetry Project benefit.
Front cover of Rock And Roll Music (2007)
"The photo in question was taken by me in 1978 at CBGBs where Elvis joined Richard Hell and the Voidoids onstage for a few songs, including "Shattered" by the Rolling Stones. The gig was a benefit for the St. Marks Church Poetry Project. Back then EC and I were good friends and we spent a lot of time together. The photos I took that night were used for CBS publicity shots for Armed Forces.
Recently Elvis got in touch with me through his wife's lawyer about using this photo for the cover of R & R music. They asked if I would mind if it was retouched to shadow out the Voidoids and crop out Richard Hell. I didn't mind and I got in touch with guitarist Ivan Julian who was bemused but also OK with it. Unfortunately Bob Quine has died and no one knew where Jerry the bass player was.
They added in the shoes, they borrowed them from somebody and shot them separately. Elvis was indeed wearing pointy shoes that night but they were not red! Nick Lowe has been caught wearing red shoes but to my knowledge Elvis has not.
