Elvis is coming! Elvis is coming!
If your reaction is "Elvis is dead," or "Elvis who?" you've obviously not been listening to the hottest new album of the past several months.
Elvis Costello, the 23-year-old Englishman who quit programing computers to become the first bespectacled, crew-cut rock star since Buddy Holly, will open the show for Leon Russell at the Bayfront Center arena on Monday, Feb. 13. Bayfront officials are awaiting signed contracts.
Costello's debut album brilliantly heralds his arrival; it's a stunningly fresh collection of clean, melodic originals. While his last-minute spot on Saturday Night Live gave little indication of his talent, Costello's songs — "I'm Not Angry," "Red Shoes," "Waiting For The End Of The World" and nearly all the rest — make his LP the sort of disc one can spin 12 times a day without boredom.
Ah, there's catch, The same night bright newcomer Costello and washed-out oldtimer Russell arrive at the arena, hot comedian Steve Martin will be across the lobby in the Bayfront auditorium. But if you don't have Martin tickets, quit worrying about a decision: The 2,000-seat auditorium was sold out within two days. (Bayfront officials have asked Martin to put on a second show. They expect an answer today.) You can be sure of seeing Martin and Costello, though, if you're willing to drive to Lakeland on Feb. 10. Martin will perform in the Civic Center that night, and seats are available still.
