New Book: "Complicated Shadows: The Life and Music of Elvis Costello"
Release Date: 2004-10

Author: Graeme Thomson

This biography is extremely comprehensive - about 140,000 words in length - and is the result of over two years research. It features much previously unpublished information on EC and corrects many inaccuracies which have grown up around his life and career.

For the first time in an Elvis book there is copious use of first hand accounts and contemporary sources. There are nearly 50 exclusive interviews used as primary sources in the book, dating from all periods of his life. Significant interviewees include: schoolfriends from Declan's primary and secondary schools; Allan Mayes (Rusty); Ken Smith and Steve Hazelhurst (Flip City); 'Honky Tonk' DJ Charlie Gillet; Dave Robinson (Stiff); John Ciambotti and John McFee (Clover); Bruce Thomas; Wreckless Eric; Ian Gomm; Roger Bechirian (co-producer); Clive Langer; Andrew Lauder (Radar & F-Beat); Chris Difford (Squeeze); various members of The Pogues; Bebe Buell; Paul Cassidy (Brodsky Quartet); Alex Cox; Steve Earle; Mitchell Froom; Bob Geldof; Richard Harvey; Marc Ribot; Bill Frisell; David Sefton (The South Bank and UCLA); Ricky Skaggs, Jerry Scheff & Ron Tutt and many others. In this way, I have been able to paint a rounded picture of Elvis as both a man and a musician.

This is the definitive work on Costello to date. In addition to a thoroughly comprehensive analysis of his life and his entire musical output, both on stage and in the studio, there are 36 pages of photographs, the oldest dating back to when he was 8 years old and many of which have never been seen before. The book also features previously unpublished lyrics from his earliest songs.

Release Date: unknown

Legendary music producer T-Bone Burnett was telling people at the New Yorker festival last weekend that he has signed a book deal with Simon & Schuster. He is expected to tap lots of his old charges - from Bob Dylan to Elvis Costello - to contribute to the songbook. "The gist [of the book] is top artists submit music they have never performed and will never perform - so the only way the buyer of the book can hear it is if they perform it themselves," said one knowledgeable source. T-Bone's last big hit was with the soundtrack for "O Brother, Where Art Thou."

EC Recording Album With Son + Danny Goffey?
Release Date: Date Unknown

Cybersleaze had this to report recently:

British singer ELVIS COSTELLO has dumped his backing group THE ATTRACTIONS for the last time - to work with a band half his age. The OLIVER'S ARMY hitmaker is recording a new album with the aid of his son MATTHEW on bass and SUPERGRASS drummer DANNY GOFFEY. And after the Attractions failed to score any hits since they reformed in 1993, Costello has vowed never again to reunite the band who helped him rise to fame in the late 1970s. He says, "Now that I don't have a band anymore I'm experimenting with loops, and a very young band. If I was a year older, I'd be the combined age of the rhythm section - and I'll be 44 next year. I think that's the way I'll put bands together from now on." Maybe it is not the band, darlin'. How 'bout writing some classic songs again?
This remains unconfirmed, however. There's been no independent confirmation that this group has done (or is planning) to do any recording other than the song "The Bridge That I Burned" on Extreme Honey.

Elvis on Scritti Politti Documentary
Viewing Date: 2000

Scritti Politti Documentary In The Works

Dec 10, 1999, 2:30 pm PT

Elvis Costello, Prefab Sprout's Paddy MacAloon, and Mos Def are the initial artists confirmed to participate in a documentary film on Scritti Politti, which may possibly air on the BBC next year.

Filming is set to begin in Los Angeles and New York in January on the as-yet-untitled film, and will include previously unseen footage of Green Gartside recording with Miles Davis during the sessions for Provision, Scritti's 1988 album. The film will also include video culled from John Peel sessions, television appearances, and music videos as well as extensive interviews with Gartside himself, who was in seclusion for most of the '90s. The singer will discuss his preoccupation with philosophy, his fascination with hip-hop, and growing up in Wales, among other things, in the film.

Filmmaker Matthew Springford is behind the project.

Scritti Politti, who will return in February, 2000, with its first album in 11 years, Anomie and Bonhomie (Virgin), is best known in the States for its 1985 hit, "Perfect Way." Additionally, Gartside is currently considering the possibility of putting together a live band and tour next year.

New Album With The Brodsky Quartet
Release Date: 2005-03

In an interview with a Belgian newspaper in September 2003, EC told that the next Brodsky Quartet release will feature two songs that he sings. EC also told that there are plans for a full second EC & Brodsky Quartet album.

Update on 2004-11-02

The Brodsky Quartet's website http://www.brodskyquartet.co.uk has been updated. Where it was previously promising new releases on their own record label in September 2004 (which didn't happen) it now says:

"In MARCH 2005 the Brodsky Quartet are set to launch Brodsky Records, their own record label. This occasion will be marked with the release of two CD's. The quartet will complete their Britten/Tchaikovsky triptych with the recording of Tchaikovsky's quartets no. 2 & 3. The second release, 'Moodswings', is an album featuring a broad range of songs for string quartet and voice including songs with singer-song-writers Sting, Elvis Costello, Ron Sexsmith, Meredith Monk, Bjork, Richard Rodney Bennett and Errollyn Wallen, as well as songs composed by secondary school children sung by Jacqueline Dankworth and Ian Shaw.

Both discs will be available from March 2005 in record shops in the UK, as well as on this website, and from April 2005 in the rest of the world."
