"This is my last-ditch effort," explained Allan Mayes. And he thrust a record towards me.
Mayes, based in Walton, has been trying to get record companies interested — so far, without luck.
So he went out and made his own EP record. On one side a couple of standard songs, on the other two he wrote himself.
It cost him £600 for 1,000 copies, and he's currently selling them at night-club appearances and sending them to record companies.
"If this doesn't work, I'll concentrate on cabaret," he says.
What is maddening for Mayes is that a few years back he was part of a singing duo with Elvis Costello whose records are in the charts now.
