Armed Forces breakthrough into pop
The presence of Elvis Costello on our back cover this month indicates the extent to which he has completely won us over with his latest album Armed Forces on Radar RAD.14. The publicity surrounding him and indeed his earlier albums did nothing to dispel the image of Costello as a punk rocker. And punk rockers as a whole are notoriously short on real talent!
However, now that Elvis has broken through into pop with this varied self-penned set of short songs that bear an irresistible distinctiveness, backed by The Attractions who provide a businesslike rock-steady backing, it is clear that his songwriting talent is immense. Moreover, this album gives notice that he'll still be writing hits in the '80s! Incidentally, it may interest our older readers to know that Elvis is the son of Mick McManus who used to sing with the Joe Loss Orchestra. In the words of the delectable Lorraine 'Compari' Chase — "small world, innit?"
