The sweat and soul of rock 'n' roll

Mike Donovan

Elvis Costello
Hammersmith Palais

Elvis Costello is a brilliant songwriter and a dynamic performer. He proved it as he and his Attractions completed their Monday night residency at the Hammersmith Palais this week.

I just hope his heart is strong enough to bear the punishing schedule he has set himself this year with touring, with and without the Attractions, broken only to write and record an album inside a month.

He was on stage for three hours belting out soul and country in between countless of his own numbers, sweating profusely but insisting on keeping his black jacket on.

He gave value for money — his encore was about as long as his set. To list the numbers would be pointless. At one stage in his encore he called "Ain't you got no homes to go to" — implying his tiredness as he launched into another dozen numbers!

I hope he knows when to stop, in the meantime I'll keep buying his records.
