Ever-elusive Elvis Costello plays Vancouver on June 7 as part of We’re All Going On A Summer Holiday tour

Mike Usinger

Ever think how weird it is that you never see Elvis Costello while strolling the shores of Ambleside Park, shopping at Choices, or chowing down at Published on Main? The man born Declan Patrick MacManus lives here, after all, thanks to his marriage to Nanaimo-born jazz superstar Diana Krall, so it makes sense he’d occasionally be out and about.

Instead, Elvis sightings tend to be rarer than sightings of, well, Elvis, who was last seen eating a two-deck friend peanut butter and banana sandwich at a Tennessee truck stop in 1989. (The world’s most-second famous Elvis, meanwhile, was semi-recently spotted on these shores with Krall at New West’s Massey Theatre in 2019 at Conversations with Nick Cave.)

That elusiveness changes this summer when Elvis Costello and the Imposters hit the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on June 7 as part of their We’re All Going On A Summer Holiday tour. Featuring support acts Nick Lowe and Los Straitjackets, the 23-date North American excursion will also include stops at such fabled venues as the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles and the Beacon Theatre in New York City.

Rounding out the Imposters—Steve Nieve, Pete Thomas, and Davey Faragher—will be Texas guitar legend Charlie Sexton. Ticket go on sale Friday (March 31) at 10 a.m. Click here for details.

Back to Costello and the West Coast, a big reason sightings are rare might be that the new wave founding father and songwriting icon seemingly doesn’t understand the idea of taking it easy, which explains why he’s released a quite frankly astonishing 10 records since 2018. That’s been augmented by three post-pandemic tours of the United States and swings through the U.K. and Northern Europe. In the middle of all this Costello’s “100 Songs and More” 10-night stand at the Gramercy Theater in New York City saw him rip through 230 original songs, only repeating himself three times.

Should you wish to add to your Elvis sightings this year, here’s his full We’re All Going On A Summer Holiday itinerary. Also, the next time you bump into him on the slopes at Cypress, leave him alone. Just because he’s famous doesn’t mean he enjoys being bothered by the common rabble.
