Imperial Bedroom
Elvis Costello and The Attractions
Steve Valdez
This newest release from Elvis C. and his band is an interesting collection of varied styles rang-ing from slow ballads to catchy pop tunes. The Attractions are especially impressive in their ability to deliver the support for each song in the varied manners which Costello calls for. The orchestrations provid-ed by Steve Nieve are tasteful and enhance the musical material admirably.
Among the tunes that are particularly well performed are The Long Honeymoon, a samba-ish ballad; "Man Out of Time," one of the singles from the album and an intense ballad-like tune; and "Almost Blue," which is a nice little ballad that sounds like it came from a 1940's smokey bar.
Imperial Bedroom is a very good album, though somewhat different from other disks by Elvis and The Attractions. It is well produced, the band is strong and talented, and the lyrics include some of the best ideas from Costello since his first set, My Aim Is True.
Best cuts: All of them are really good; my personal picks are those mentioned plus "Human Hands" and "Kid About It."
