Rare Costello

NME

Elvis Costello releases a second Ten Bloody Marys-style compilation of rare material on November 16.

Called Out Of Our Idiot it's on Demon Records and is a 16-track collection of Costello rarities recorded under his various aliases. It includes one previously unreleased track, "So Young," and one other track that hasn't been released in the UK before, "Seven Day Weekend."

The spine of the album sleeve credits Idiot to Various Artists, a reference to the seven Costello guises/collaborations under which the tracks were recorded. With characteristic perversity, all seven identities — Elvis Costello And The Attractions; The Costello Show; Elvis Costello And The Attractions with the TKO Horns; The Coward Brothers; The Emotional Toothpaste; Elvis Costello and the Confederates; Napoleon Dynamite and the Royal Guard — are featured on the front of the album.

The album sleeve doesn't feature any photos of Costello or the Attractions, and is a send-up of kitsch TV-advertised greatest hits albums.

The full track listing is: "Seven Day Weekend" (with Jimmy Cliff, never released in the UK before), "Turning The Town Red," "Heathen Town," "The People's Limousine" (with T-Bone Burnett), "So Young" (previously unavailable), "American Without Tears No 2," "Get Yourself Another Fool" (with T Bone Burnett), "Walking On Thin Ice" (written by Yoko Ono), "Blue Chair," "Baby It's You" (with Nick Lowe), "From Head To Toe," "Shoes Without Heels," "The Flirting Kind," "Imperial Bedroom," and "The Stamping Ground."

U2, Elvis Costello, The Pogues and Van Morrison are among artists who appear on the Live for Ireland charity album, due out on November 16.

The album, recorded at last year's massive Self-Aid concert in Dublin, also featured tracks by Clannad, Christy Moore, Thin Lizzy, Chris Rea, Chris De Burgh, The Boomtown Rats, In Tua Nua and Cactus World News.

U2's contribution is on the only recording available of their version of Bob Dylan's "Maggie's Farm," while Elvis Costello and the Attractions tackle Jimmy Cliff's classic "Many Rivers To Cross."

The show marked the last live appearance of Bob Geldof's now defunct Boomtown Rats, who contribute "Lookin' After Number One."

Modelled on Live Aid, the Self-Aid show last May used nearly 30 Irish bands to help highlight Ireland's chronic unemployment problem. All royalties from the album go to the Self-Aid Trust to encourage job-creation schemes.

MCA Records are also releasing an Irish-issue only, 28-track double album of the concert. It will feature one track by each of the bands who appeared – including The Chieftains, Moving Hearts, Rory Gallagher and Paul Brady – plus a different Elvis Costello and the Attractions track, their version of the Beatles' "Leave My Kitten Alone."

An MCA spokesman told NME that import copies of the double album will be easily available in British Record shops.
