Nationwide gig guide

NME

The arrival of September invariably signals a burst of activity on the gig circuit, as the autumn season starts to gather momentum, and this year is no exception. This week, for instance, sees the start of several major tours — including Elvis Costello & the Attractions (right), who kick off in Southampton (Saturday), Oxford (Sunday), Birmingham (Monday) and Sheffield (Tuesday); UB40, whose schedule opens in Liverpool (Monday) and Glasgow (Wednesday), with Mikey Dread guesting; and Imagination, who play the first of seven London concerts on Thursday (the other six follow at the end of the mouth), before setting out into the provinces.

Haircut 100, Elvis Costello, Ultravox and Dire Straits are among acts already confirmed for appearances at a major new venue, the 2,500-seater Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham.

The venue, part of the £12-million Royal Centre complex, officially opens with two Elton John concerts on November 27 and 28 (part of his UK tour announced last week. Attractions at the hall will cover the whole musical gamut, from symphony concerts to rock — though initial indications are that rock and pop will be predominant.

So far set for December are Lindisfarne (6), Steeleye Span with Maddy Pryor (8), Michael Schenker Group (10), Ultravox (13), Dire Straits (14), Haircut 100 (19) and Elvis Costello & The Attractions (21). Those appearing during the part of 1983, though exact dates haven't yet been announced, include The Stranglers, The Teardrop Explodes, Sky, Joan Armatrading, Leo Sayer, The Dubliners and Johnny Mathis.

It's expected that Haircut 100, Ultravox and Dire Straits will all be playing further dates during the pre-Christmas period, and details are expected shortly Michael Schenker's UK tour is announced elsewhere in this issue. Elvis Costello's Nottingham show is an addition to his previously announced tour schedule.
