From A Whisper To A Scream

Elvis Costello And The Attractions

Chris Bohn

For once Costello lets the mask slip long enough to let out a heartfelt plea (to be heard by his lover), as clouded as it might be in the inevitable word games. Though a good album track, it's a daft choice for a single — his excessively mannered voice makes much of the song incomprehensible on the first few plays, while the duet format — featuring mismatched Squeeze vocalist Glenn Tilbrook — diffuses its focus still further.
