NME readers

If the massive response of NME readers to our request for lists of personal faves shows anything, then it's the profound inroads made into public taste by The Smiths. They inhabit the Hot 100 to an extent that only Morrissey would not find amazing. Only the support for a combination of Joy Division and New Order goes anywhere near it.

While most of the rock icons are well represented, such critical touchstones as The Byrds, Suicide and Sly And The Family Stone are conspicuously absent and soul and funk continue to be treated as singles-only musics. The presence of no less than nine LPs from the last year demonstrates how fluid is both mass taste and perceptions of pop's history.
