Sweet Dreams (F-Beat)

Elvis Costello

Julie Burchill

Minstrels in maudlin mood. “I should have known you’d never share my name,” whines Elvis Costello. Well, we can’t all be called ELVIS! There is such a thing as swinging, non-po country music - I’m thinking of early Dolly Parton such as ‘Dumb Blonde’ and ‘I Don’t Want To Throw Rice’ - but the stuff Costello is currently giving the kiss of life to is no less or more than a mawkish bore, an attempt to make a manifesto out of being another just another notch on Tammy Wynette’s wardrobe.
