Stiffs Live
Adam Block
Elvis Costello, Ian Dury, Nick Lowe, Larry Wallis, Wreckless Eric
This live sampler from the crack team of England's pub-rock new wave is finally available and it's a treat. Nick Lowe cops a melody from Chuck Berry's "C'est La Vie," and roars with it. Wreckless Eric does the same with "Save the Last Dance for Me," sounding like a drunken hybrid of Bryan Ferry and Screamin' Jay Hawkins. Larry Wallis mounts a great Graham Parker parody on "I'm a Police Car," Costello's nearly a cappella reading of Bacharach/David's "I Don't Know What to do with Myself" is a marvel, and "Miracle Man" torques. Ian Dury is hilariously ghoulish. This LP has few pretensions and no dull cuts. As the logo announces: We came, we saw, we left.
