Elvis Costello is coming to Edmonton.
With Toronto's Battered Wives, Costello and his band will be appearing at the Jubilee Auditorium on Sunday. Nov. 12.
Costello is the best known of the so-called New Wave of English music. He sprang into the limelight with the release of his first album, My Aim Is True and backed up the album with a stage presentation described as the sharpest and tightest of any touring rock band in England.
With his second album. This Year's Model, Costello dispelled any doubts he was an artist of international calibre.
The boney thin guitarist has been credited with stripping the frills from rock music. His songs are short, sharp without any embellishments save a basic bass, guitars and drums.
Dressing in a late '50s style, with greased back hair and Buddy Holly type glasses, Costello has addressed himself in his gravelly harsh voice to a kind of anti-heroism.
Elvis, born Declan McManus, is 23 and was a computer operator in an Elizabeth Arden cosmetics factory before turning to rock and roll.
Costello made outrageous attempts to be signed to a record label. At a record company convention in London, he played outside the hotel with his guitar and amplifier until the police finally hauled him away.
In August, 1976, he approached Stiff Records, a small independent company which has since become the vehicle for many of the New Wave rock bands. The albums have since sold hundreds of thousands of copies throughout North America and Europe.
Tickets will be available shortly at Mike's Ticket Agency.
