40 years (and a bit on) At the end of the strange mini tour of the U.K. taking in places like Loughborough, Hanley near Stoke, Norwich, Belfast, Dublin, Canterbury and his "sort of" native Liverpool, Elvis returns to London and performs at the 10th anniversary celebration at Dingwalls in Camden in North London benefitting Capitol Radio's "Help A London Child" with expensive (for that time) tickets but you were rewarded, besides seeing an amazing band, with a lovely card ticket with a brilliant Edward Barker cartoon of the band as crows! Perfect. This audience recording is again a fine quality recording, purloined by me from a trip to Camden market on an away day in London that included a guided tour of Abbey Road studios in August 1983 when Elvis was everywhere in the media following the release of "Punch The Clock". I think I bought a copy of "The Face" with Elvis on the cover and read it on the coach home. The gig starts with 7 songs performed with the T.K.O. Horns including a brave start with "Let Them All Talk", the opener of the new album. After the upcoming single of "Everyday I Write The Book" one of Elvis' most re-interpreted by himself songs, the horns leave the stage and we get essentially a setlist which mirrors the 1982 tour fairly accurately. "Watching The Detectives" is played with no segues or snippets to other songs and feels all the better for being played in its most basic format. "Beyond Belief" is strangely absent and the main set ends with a sprightly "Clubland". The horns return for five songs including an ardent and slow "Clowntime Is Over" and here there's a slight glitch and pitch change that needed addressing from the original cassette recording. "Big Sister's Clothes" starts the final phase and has The (English) Beat's "Stand Down Margaret" tacked on the end which had already been played at the sessions for BBC Radio One's "The Evening Show" with DJ David Jensen in a more ominous and threatening performance. Again the horns join for the last two songs to give an upbeat end to a pretty fine display.
