ELVIS COSTELLO & THE IMPOSTERS

Momofuku (Lost Highway)

Tim Perlich

Rating: 3-star reviews3-star reviews3-star reviews

The title might sound like something Elvis Costello would mutter with a mouthful of bran flakes while reading an unfavourable review at the breakfast table, but it’s actually the name of a popular New York noodle restaurant.

This second album for Lost Highway isn’t radically different from 2004’s return to sneering form The Delivery Man, only the rockin’ tracks sound slightly less raucous and the ballads not quite as bitter. So he’s back in Attractions mode, sans the old piss and vinegar. But, then, that’s to be expected from a man enjoying a life of comfortable domesticity who no longer feels a desperate need to prove he’s still a vital rock ’n’ roll threat, as he did after the dreadful North album. Jenny Lewis is credited for vocal harmonies on a number of tracks, but she’s mixed so low it could’ve been Scarlett Johansson.
