Elvis horror!

Melody Maker

Elvis fever is sweeping North End Road, London. While Elvis Costello played at the Nashville Rooms (capacity 400) on Sunday night, chaos reigned in the streets outside as 1,000 people were locked out.

When the police came along to "control" the crowd, eight were arrested and taken off to Hammersmith Police Station, where they were charged with highway obstruction and bailed to appear at West London Magistrates Court on August 15.

Dai Davies, manager of the Nashville, said that the "quite phenomenal" reaction to Elvis was the best since appearances at the venue by the Stranglers and Commander Cody.

Others were less happy, notably those who had been kept waiting for hours on a hope and a promise.

Admittance to Costello's future Sunday gigs at the Nashville — August 14, 21, 28 and September 4 — will be by ticket only, and limited to two per person.

So It Goes back

A new series of ITV's rock programme So It Goes is to be networked by the channel next month.

Although details of dates and times have yet to be finalised, the new 10-programme series will feature contributions by Van Morrison, Muddy Waters, Elvis Costello, the Nick Lowe Band, Dave Edmunds and the Buzzcocks.

Tony Wilson, the programme's presenter, told the MM that the new series would be slightly different from the first, with bands being filmed in concert instead of in the studio.

"We don't like the synthetic atmosphere of Top Of The Pops or the way bands play to a blank wall on the Old Grey Whistle Test. The new system will work much better than those," he said.

Stiff's "Hype-Elvis" campaign couldn't have been more successful in exposure terms, and ironically he has emerged at the other end with increased credibility. The third single taken from the album, My Aim Is True. Both sides are irresistible. Just go and get the elpee.
